Jeffrey L. Kupperman, MD, FACP, FCCP

Dr. Jeffrey L. Kupperman has practiced Pulmonary Diseases, Critical Care Medicine, and Internal Medicine in Santa Barbara, California, since 1981. He is a Diplomate of the American Boards of Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Diseases, and a Fellow of both the American College of Physicians and the American College of Chest Physicians.

Dr. Kupperman is a native of New Orleans, received his B.S. undergraduate degree from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, and his M.D. medical degree from the Tulane University School of Medicine, where he was elected to the Αlpha Omega Αlpha (AOA) Honor Medical Society his junior year. He completed his training as a Medical Intern and Resident and as an NIH and American Heart Association Awarded Respiratory Physiology and Medicine Fellow at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where he was awarded both the Outstanding Resident and the Outstanding Fellow Awards.

In 1981, Dr. Kupperman moved to Santa Barbara, and joined Dr. Andrew Binder in the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Department at the Santa Barbara Medical Foundation Clinic, now the Sansum Medical Clinic. Dr. Robert Wright later joined him there in practice. In 1998, Dr. Kupperman again associated with Dr. Binder and opened his current private practice of Pulmonary Medicine and Internal Medicine in Santa Barbara. Dr. Ronald Ungerer joined him several months later, and then Dr. Wright joined the practice in 2004. Drs. Richard Belkin and Jeffrey Sager joined the current five-man practice of the Santa Barbara Pulmonary Consultants as partners in 2009.

Dr. Jeffrey Kupperman

Dr. Kupperman has practiced at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital since 1981. He has recently served on the Cottage Health System Board of Directors as the Secretary of the Board. He is a past Chief of Staff of Cottage Hospital, and the current Chairman of the CHS Medical Staffs’ Credentials Committee. He has also served as the Chairman of the Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, the Medical Director of the Respiratory Care Department, the Medical Director of the Intensive Care Unit, and the Medical Director of Informatics. He has been active in the House Staff Training Program at Cottage Hospital since 1981, and has an appointment as an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California. He was awarded the Outstanding New Faculty Award at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in 1982, and has won the Excellence in Teaching Award there yearly from 1981 to the present.

Dr. Kupperman has been active in the Santa Barbara community as a Past-President of the American Lung Association of Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties, a Board Member of the American Heart Association and the Santa Barbara Jewish Federation, and a member of the Health and Grants Committees of the Santa Barbara Foundation. He was honored with the 2010 Healthcare Hero Award from the Santa Barbara Neighborhood Health Clinics, and is currently the Co-Chair of their Honorary Campaign Cabinet and a past member of their Board of Directors. He is, in addition, a Past-President of the California Thoracic Society and continues to serve on its Executive Committee. He is an active member of the American Lung Association and the American Thoracic Society. He is a member of the Santa Barbara County Medical Society and the California Medical Association.

Dr. Kupperman enjoys running, skiing, and traveling with his family. He and his wife Nancy, a pediatrician at the Santa Barbara County Clinics, have children of whom they are extremely proud: Shira, a graduate of UC Berkeley, then a financial consultant in San Francisco, now an MBA from NYU’s Stern Business School, and an Investment Analyst at SkyBridge Capital Alternative Asset Management Company in Manhattan; Adam Boehler, Shira’s husband, a Wharton Business School graduate from the University of Pennsylvania, and now in Private Equity; Asher, a graduate of Yale University and Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, and now in the Orthopedic Surgery residency training program at UCLA; Elizabeth, Asher’s wife, who received her undergraduate and master’s degrees in Accounting from University of Tennessee, and now a CPA at Ovation TV Network; and Eli, a graduate of Harvard University in Mathematics in Economics and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and now in the Orthopedic Surgery residency training program at UCLA, with his brother! Shira and Adam’s Ruthie, Abie, and Essie are Dr. Kupperman’s favorite grandchildren.
